Established in 1988, Houston Crackdown coordinates and supports community volunteer projects in alcohol and other drug abuse through prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation efforts. The program also administers grant funding to various drug abuse prevention programs throughout the city.

The availability and popularity of MDMA is increasing in the area. Other club drugs readily available in Houston include Rohypnol, Ketamine, GHB, LSD, and PCP.

The most commonly abused pharmaceutical drugs in Houston continue to be Hydrocodone, Promethazine with Codeine and other Codeine cough syrups and Benzodiazepines (mostly Alprazolam). In the Houston area, the use of OxyContin and hydrocodone is increasing, which is creating an increased demand for detoxification and methadone treatment. Intelligence indicates that Alprazolam sold for $2-$4/pill and anabolic steroids sold for $1-$3/tablet in Houston during the second half of 2005.
